According to Wikipedia, social media is a shift in how people discover, read and share news, information and content. Social media has become extremely popular because it allows people to connect in the online world to form relationships for personal and business. Social media allows you to:
-
Build relationships
-
Present and build your personal brand
-
Business development
-
Network
-
Use as an extension of your company’s customer service
-
Actively participate in the conversation about your company
-
Improve services and products offered by your company
-
Collect feedback on your product, service or website
-
Drive traffic to your website
Although social media sites are generally user-friendly and take only minutes to get started with, there are some best practices to keep in mind:
-
Post a picture with your profile, one that represents you but is also professional.
-
Be mindful of how you are representing your personal brand. People will create a perception of you and your brand from your profile.
-
Create an internal company policy for use of social networking sites.
-
Each social networking site has privacy settings. Adjust your privacy settings to match your level of comfort.
-
The content you write or upload (photos, videos, etc.) to your personal pages is public. If you wouldn’t write it in a business email, don’t post it online.
