LEED – Linking Education and Economic Development, partners with the Los Rios Community College District’s Business and Economic Development Center to present CONVERGENCE 2009. This quarterly breakfast series showcases the issues that exist at the intersection of education, workforce development, and economic prosperity.  Our theme for 2009 is ADVOCACY AND ACTION.

The 2009 CONVERGENCE series will focus on public policy and advocacy issues that relate to education and workforce development.  “With President Obama, Senate ProTem Darrell Steinberg and Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, we know that these issues will be at the forefront of the federal, state and regional agendas. We want to make sure that we utilize the platform here at Convergence to not only discuss but advance this critical set of issues,” said LEED CEO David Butler.

For the May 15, 2009 CONVERGENCE program, LEED and Los Rios Community College’s Business and Economic Development Center are working with Senate ProTem Darrell Steinberg to develop an informative program to update Sacramento business, education and civic leaders on state priorities related to improving public schools with sufficient career and technical education programs to prepare students for success in the “new economy.” Steinberg was recently quoted in the Los Angeles Times: “We are sapping ourselves of economic vitality by not assuring that thousands of young people are educated and trained for the workforce.”

Senator Steinberg will provide his perspective on this critical work, along with a panel of experts representing the perspective of policy makers, educators, and employers.
